Broken bone in foot? [Oct. 2nd, 2008|07:38 pm]

I think I may have a minor broken bone in my foot -- somewhere in the metatarsals. It started hurting a month ago after a stiff fall, and it's been getting a little worse with time. I don't know, it could be a sprain, but I've had those before and it doesn't feel like that. I'll go see a doctor, but I kind of want to know what to expect. Do any of you have experience with this? What do they do for minor breaks in the foot? Can they even do anything? If I don't do anything, what's my worst-case scenario?

win a harness! [Sep. 8th, 2008|06:19 pm]

I'm trying to raise money for the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation Climb 4 Life event in Utah.

I'm willing to barter for donations.  I've got a Black Diamond Primrose Women's Harness size 10.  It's brand new and super cool.

For every $5 you donate to my HERA Fundraising page, I'll put your name on a raffle ticket.  I'll draw the winning raffle ticket on Friday, September 12th at 7pm.

To enter the raffle just simply donate to my HERA Fundraising page then email me at slockwoo underscore knits at yahoo dot com to let me know you did it.  If you win, I'll mail you the harness (only within the US please).

HERA Foundation is dedicated to stopping the loss of women to ovarian cancer through rock climbing events called Climb4Life.  Ovarian cancer is a very terrible disease.  I am a survivor and a rock climber so you should donate.  In addition to the chance to win the super awesome harness, all donations are tax refundable!

MEC Video Contest [Aug. 22nd, 2008|11:03 am]

Has anyone here been checking out the videos in the MEC Sweet Spots video contest?

I didn't know about it until I found out a friend of mine entered his video, but I've ended up spending a lot of time having fun watching other videos and getting psyched when I'm stuck inside.

Hope the post is ok with the mods. Just looking to share (and trying not to shamelessly promote Night Sessions too much).

That first plateau [Aug. 14th, 2008|08:09 am]

Hi everyone, noob here. I've been climbing for a little over six months (indoor, mostly TR) and oh boy, have I hit a plateau. I got pretty good pretty fast - was climbing 10c after about three months, I think? - but haven't improved very much since then.

Currently, I can handle a fair number of 10d and V1, but it feels like I'll never be able to progress beyond that! I've heard from a lot of people that this is a normal plateau, so I'm not too worried about it, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to push myself beyond it other than just continuing to climb. Advice?

More details for the interestedCollapse )

speaking of weight... [Aug. 14th, 2008|10:14 am]

i was wondering if anybody's noticed their weight change since they've started climbing; have any of you lost or gained any due to climbing?

for some reason, my weight hasn't changed at all, and it's been almost a year since i started :/

lead climbing with large weight difference [Aug. 9th, 2008|11:30 am]

i want to lead climb indoors with one of my friends, but there's a larger-than-desired weight difference between us. i weigh 105 lb and he weighs 175 lb. i know how to lead, but i've only lead belayed someone who was about 130 lb. my gym said that i can safely belay 1.5 times my weight (i.e. ~160 lb). one guy at the gym mentioned wearing weights -- is there a type that's best? conversely, do i need weights at all? btw we belay with a grigri if that makes any difference.

San Francisco Bay Area - Easy Sport Climbing? [Jul. 24th, 2008|12:20 pm]

Dear all -
I'm not sure if anyone would know, but...
Is there any area around San Francisco, with some really easy sport climbs?
I want to introduce a friend to lead climbing, and he really wants to try it outdoors...
Anyone? :)

finger strength [Jun. 5th, 2008|05:47 pm]

[mood |crankycranky]

I want to strengthen my fingers but I don't get to the gym to climb very often. Other than drilling something into the wall, can anyone recommend some exercises?
