Tendon injury [Jun. 29th, 2009|11:30 am]

I've been climbing for a few years now. Every now and again I would get some pain in my fingers, lay off climbing for a week or so and it goes away.
About a month ago, I injured my ring finger on my left hand. Let it rest for a while, started climbing again - but the pain is not going away. It only bothers me when I climb or if I apply pressure to it. It doesn't really prevent me from doing anything, its not a sharp pain, but I'm bothered by the fact that it has been a month and its not healing. I've iced it, took a lot of vitamin I(duprphin), let it rest - nothign really helps. Any ideas from anyone?

Slot Canyons [Apr. 15th, 2009|11:36 am]

Dear all -
Not exactly a climbing question, but related :)
We are planning a short trip the first weekend in May. We wanted to go see the slot canyons, but we are kind of limited with time - since we are only taking 3 days - and don't want to spend most of the weekend driving from the airport to the destination (we are in SF).
Would anyone have good advice on what we should do?
There are two canyons near Page, AZ and then there is Escalante in Utah that we are considering.
I'm still trying to figure out closest airports etc to these destinations.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Summit Rock at Castle Rock, Los Gatos, CA [Mar. 28th, 2009|11:23 am]

Hi there - I have a silly question.

Would anyone by any chance know if the falcons are nesting at Summit Rock? :)

I have no idea where to look for this info. We've been trying to climb there all summer and it was always closed - have anyone been there lately by chance?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Gloves? [Feb. 6th, 2009|02:24 am]

[mood |calmcalm]

I've recently gotten back into climbing, and this time I've made the investment of buying my own gear and an actual membership to my local climbing gym. This means I'm climbing a lot more often, which is taking a bit of a toll on my fingers... they aren't used to the friction of the hand holds against them, particularly the middles of them near the knuckle. I don't really want callouses since I am a girl and like having soft hands, so I am kinda thinking of getting some climbing gloves, but I'm not sure what to look for. I want something flexible enough that breathes a bit, but I also want it to protect my fingers. Any suggestions?
Thanks! :)

Questions? [Jan. 26th, 2009|02:24 am]

Hi, I'm new to the community. I have a few questions. I started climbing a few months ago and I've noticed changes in my overall tone and strength but I feel as if I've reached a plateau of sorts. I have a training board at my house which I train on after I climb; which is almost every other day. I feel like one problem is my weight. I'm 6'1" and weigh 237ish. I'm fairly stocky (I guess). This also brings up conflicts with people belaying and such and especially my potentials as a climber. These questions are random:

1. Is it normal for someone who climbs to weigh as much as I do?
2. What things can I do to reduce overall weight?
3. I recently blew through a pair of Evolv Pontas in like 2 or 3 months. I blew the toe out. Is this normal? How does Evolv's rubber stand up to 5.10s since I just bought a pair of Anasazi Verdes?
4. What things can I do to become an overall better climber?

Climbing gyms around Pasadena [Dec. 28th, 2008|07:30 pm]

Would anyone around here know a climbing gym around Pasadena, CA?
My climbing partner moved to So Cal for work, and I just came back from visiting him. The only gym that we found close enough to where he works is a bouldering only gym and doesn't look to be very friendly...
Anyone know of a gym?

Leader fall on a slab [Oct. 13th, 2008|12:36 pm]

Is there a good way to take a fall on a slab - and to avoid the sand paper effect?
Basically, every time I take a fall more then 2' on a slab it ends the climbing day...
I took a friend out yesterday to teach him to lead, he took a 10' fall and that was that - one hand completely scraped off.
Is there a proper technique which will help avoid that?

Thank you!

Injury question, part 2: [Oct. 7th, 2008|02:42 pm]

I don't have a stress fracture in my foot as I feared last week, but I do have strained ligaments in my foot, the peroneus longus and something in the cuboids. I couldn't get a clear answer from my doctor, who didn't really understand that total inactivity isn't an option. Have any of you recovered from this? Did you have to wear a boot, etc? How long?

Or, of course, if any of you can send me to a community that deals with injuries, that would be cool, too.
